Satellite Tracking of People LLC (STOP) based in Houston, Texas, is a leading provider of state-of-the-art GPS-based, offender tracking and monitoring hardware and software for law enforcement agencies worldwide.
In STOP's pursuit of large, law enforcement equipment bids, they wanted to complement their BluTag product, a GPS-based tracking device developed with SPARK, with a simpler product for basic, house arrest monitoring. The BluBand is used to record the date and time an offender enters and leaves their home and consists of a small, lightweight radio frequency (RF) transceiver that communicates with a base station.
As a sister product to the BluTag, STOP wanted the BluBand to have a similar, tamper-proof enclosure, cost-effective design and maintain a family look. STOP also wanted to quickly get the BluBand to market.
SPARK provided their mechanical engineering and industrial design expertise in collaboration with STOP's electrical engineering and software development team. Our previous work on the BluTag device allowed us to apply important design lessons in the development of the BluBand:
Utilized the existing strapping from the BluTag which features an improved, SPARK-designed interlocking, waterproof clipping mech-anism. The mechanism provides more efficient assembly time, yet robust protection against tampering without activating the monitoring alarm.
Created a BluBand enclosure that echoes the design language — form and features — of the BluTag and the same perceived impenetrability.
Applied DFM&A solutions learned from the BluTag product to minimize production costs.
